When Shawna and I met at Starbucks for her consultation two years ago, I knew right away that we were a perfect fit for each other. I also hoped deep inside that we would become good friends. Sometimes when you meet people, you just know that they are supposed to be in your life. Shawna and her husband D’Arcy are two of those people.
Shawna had contacted me through my website and mentioned a Super Hero theme for her wedding. My immediate reaction? YES, PLEASE! My husband and I wave our nerd flags proudly, so I was beyond excited to be a part of this awesome project and beautiful union of two unforgettable people.
I love to ask couples how they met and how they became engaged. Shawna told me her engagement story over coffee and it was so cute and fun and, I later learned after getting to know them, true to their character.
She said their engagement had actually came out of a misunderstanding. D’Arcy had really wanted to see Evil Dead, while Shawna was “not really a fan”. When he asked her (five months in advance) if she would go with him when it came out, she said it would all depend on how engaged she was feeling. While Shawna had meant that as if it piqued her interest at the time, D’Arcy took it to mean he should put a ring on it! About a month before the movie came out, Shawna had returned home from grocery shopping to an empty and quiet house – an odd occurrence at their home! As she sat down the groceries, she noticed two candles in the entryway, accompanied by a note. The note instructed her to follow the candles, and so she did, weaving all the way throughout the house. As she approached the last pair of candles, she noticed a ring box. She opened it to find a note telling her to turn around. When she did, D’Arcy was there and down on one knee. According to Shawna, “the rest is history… and I even saw Evil Dead.”
One thing I quickly learned about Shawna + D’Arcy and their friends and family is that there is an abundance of love throughout these relationships. It was palpable and I could not help but feel wrapped up in all its warmth. I have never met such a loving group of people and I am so grateful to have been able to experience it.
Shawna + D’Arcy, I am so glad I met you and so honored to have been your photographer and part of your beautiful day. I wish you much love and happiness throughout your life together. Thank you for taking me in. <3
P.S. We REALLY need to schedule that game night!
These girls cracked me up.
Little miss was so excited about her manicure and hair.
The girls from The Red Stiletto and Blush Me were so awesome.
Soon-to-be Mrs.!
The amount of detail that went into this wedding was astounding and inspiring. Just look at Shawna’s custom comic book shoes!

Stunner…
To bits and pieces…
That dress…
No detail was left out.
Table seating was organized by comics!
When Shawna told me they would be breaking through a brick wall when they entered the reception, I’m pretty sure I cheered – literally.
The gorgeous, handmade bouquets and decorations made from comic book pages.
They even made sure there were plenty of games and activities for the kids…
Because what is a Super Hero themed wedding without masks?
Their ceremony and reception were held at the gorgeous and historic Shiloh Hall in Fort Wayne.
Mama Merrick helping Shawna with her necklace.
Finishing touches…
Gorgeous light and a gorgeous bride…
The bridal attendants – love all of the coordinating colors of their dresses and bouquets! Can you see the comic book pages tucked into the flowers?
The handsome groom – I don’t think we stopped laughing during portraits…
Their unique vows were just perfect.
That moment during their vows when D’Arcy made everyone cry – myself included.
A beautiful serenade…
Sealed with a kiss!
Such a fun reception…
BOOM!
When they weren’t joking and smiling, they were nuzzling into each other.
The father/daughter and mother/son dances get me every time.
Speaking from the heart…
BAMF.
Details are everything.
Shawna spent a good five minutes calling out all the single ladies, especially the ones who were hiding!
He tricked the fellas and tucked the garter into his vest the first time around!
So much love and laughter.
Chucks.
The girls had engraved puzzle pieces bracelets.
And of course there was a light saber vs. Thor’s hammer fight.
Congratulations Shawna + D’Arcy!
